June 2025 Music Recap

This one is a little late, and it’s not because of me being lazy in reviewing albums as I listened to them last month. It’s because last month SUCKED. I genuinely only listened to two albums that I will come back to at some point. I have spent the last week sifting through albums lists from last month trying to find something else I liked, but I have come up empty. Here we go.

These Ones Were Ok I Guess

Virgin - Lorde (Alt-Pop, Electronic)

I like Lorde. This one was lyrically a little unfocused and hard to follow, but it had the melodramatic (see what I did there?) sound qualities that make Lorde’s music Lorde’s. I don’t know how much I’ll be back for the whole thing, but there are singles that will be on my playlist.

Addison - Addison Rae (Alt-Pop)

This one is exactly what you’d expect from this album. Ms. Rae played it safe, the music is not that exciting. The two or three highlights are good, everything else will be forgotten. I hope she makes something a little more daring next time around.

Made June Worth It

Magic, Alive! - McKinley Dixon (Jazz Rap, Conscious Hip Hop)

Mr. Dixon’s run of albums over the past few years is something to behold. The emotion he puts into his work is palpable. He said in an interview that he writes his songs by just writing down how things make him feel throughout the day, however innocuous, and eventually ends up with a song. He is masterful at painting these pictures that get exactly what he means across. The live instrumentation on the album really helps it come to life.

BLUSH - Kevin Abstract (Pop Rap, Southern Hip Hop)

For all of the BROCKHAMPTON fans who have wanted another BROCKHAMPTON project since their breakup, this is about as close as you’re going to get. Mr. Abstract is back to his ways of being the man behind ten or so artists coming together for a combined effort across an album. The amalgamation of so many different musicians really does help make for music that is instrumentally and emotionally diverse. It’s a bit eclectic, but it’s enjoyably eclectic.

How Did I Forget This One

Live At Revolution Hall - Adrianne Lenker (Indie Folk, Singer Songwriter)

This one came out in April and I have just forgotten to write about it. With how barren June was, this is a great opportunity. This is not a great introduction to Ms. Adrianne’s music, but for those who enjoy her stuff this is an awesome project. There’s so many funny little moments from soundcheck, live shows, and backstage included here. The grainy sound quality adds a lot to the album’s charm. I love it.

June 2025 Playlist

Under Construction

Well, one page worth of writing is unfortunately all that I have. Hopefully next month offers a little more in the way of good music.

January 2025 Music Recap

I’m going to write here at the end of the month to talk about music! I’ll probably follow a similar structure each time, giving my opinions on the bigger releases and pointing out some smaller releases that I think deserve a listen. I’ll highlight some stuff from other years that I listened to for the first time that I enjoyed and some stuff I’m looking forward to next month. I’m also going to include a playlist of some of my favorite songs from the month. Alright, here we go. Oh! I’m also going to put the genre next to the album title so you’ll have a better idea if the album is something you’ll enjoy. If you don’t know what the genre means, give the album a listen and learn what the sound is! The Big Releases DeBI TiRAR MaS FOToS - Bad Bunny (Latin Pop, Reggaetron) After rocketing to the top and recognizing that his last album sounded too complacent and uninspired, Bad Bunny returned to his Puerto Rican roots. This album is so emotional and pulls from so many personal places for Mr....

May 2025 Music Recap

Looking back on this month, there were a lot more highlights than I thought there were. For some reason I felt like May was pretty dry, but I was WRONG. Let's get into it: Liked List GOLLIWOG - billy woods (Experimental Hip Hop) He does it again. Cerebral hip hop that comes through with so many poignant one liners. Like his other projects, Mr. woods has characters from all over the underground hip hop map on this one. Somehow all of the different styles sound cohesive. The theme of fear and how we respond to it is laced into both the lyrics and instrumentals of this album, with in your face samples that create this chilling feel on some of GOLLIWOG’s tracks. This project touches on fear similarly to how Maps discusses travel; every type of fear is explored from every perspective. GOLLIWOG just builds and builds on itself and definitely deserves a listen all the way through. Sincerely, - Kali Uchis (Pop Soul) As the title suggests, this is Kali’s most sentimental album yet. If you...

The Sliding Scale of Success for the Blue Jays

It is normally very clear whether a team is “going for it” or “rebuilding”. The big spenders, like the Dodgers, will almost always be in it. Some teams, like the 2024 Tigers, just have some things click and a window suddenly opens. Some teams, like the Nationals, are in the middle of a rebuild. Those who refuse to spend, like the Pirates, are locked into a perpetual rebuild and only succeed by accident. And then there are the Blue Jays. For the past few years the Blue Jays have existed in this strange window where it isn’t really clear what they are going for. Teams not knowing which direction they should head in is not all that unusual on the order of a single season, but the length of this stay in limbo for the Blue Jays is quite strange. We’re going to take a look at how we got here and the different paths ahead. After making the ALCS in two straight seasons, the Blue Jays were awful in 2017 and 2018. If you just look at their record, they look pretty awful in 2019 too, but this yea...
