March 2025 Music Recap

Only 18 days late, here's everything that I listened to in March! I decided that I'm going to just keep adding and removing sections as I see fit for each month. Here we go!

The Big Releases

Forever Is A Feeling - Lucy Dacus (Indie Pop, Singer-Songwriter)

Lucy's first solo album in a WHILE. Of course she wasn't quiet in between what with the whole boygenius thing. I absolutley loved her last album, Home Video, for how much it felt like being in middle school and high school. There are very few listening experiences that capture a feeling quite as well. This album did not disappoint on the lyrical front, which is what you listen to Lucy's music for.

Music - Playboi Carti (Cloud Rap, Rage)

This one falls into the bucket that a lot of modern rap seems to fall in: throw an hour and a half of songs at the wall and maybe twenty minutes will stick. The most enjoyable part of this album was the features. Pretty disappointing from a guy who does have the ability to make good music.

Mayhem - Lady Gaga (Dance Pop)

The popular opinion about this album is that the first half is a lot stronger than the second half. I do agree with the herd here. I did really like this one though and I'm happy that Ms. Gaga was able to return to form after that weird Joker musical movie thing.

Lil Durk -  Deep Thoughts (Pop Rap)

I continue to not hate Lil Durk. Out of all of the modern rap garbage that gets way too popular, Durk is the one I mind the least. His bars aren't fantastic and the beats are what we've come to expect from modern rap, but his flows are disctinct enough to set him apart. He also does have the ability to make some pretty thoughtful tracks, which continues on this project.

Worth Your Time

Glory -  Perfume Genius (Art Pop)

I like that we get a lot of Mr. Genuis's voice on this one. It has a very intimate feel to it. This one has a very different feel to his recent production-heavy albums, but I think it works in his favor. You'll know if you're going to like this one from the jump.

Foxes in the Snow -  Jason Isbell (Americana)

I've been loving a lot of this folksy heartlandish music recently. This new project from Jason Isbell isn't my favorite album under that umbrella this year, but I enjoyed this project quite a bit.

For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women) -  Japanese Breakfast (Chamber Pop)

Ms. Breakfast continues to improve with each and every project. I am a sucker for when artists interpolate off of their past albums when they are touching on similar feelings from a new perspective a la boygenius with Letter To An Old Poet. In this project it's done a couple times, but most notably when she calls back to Paprika which was really cool. This project has fun, it has melancholy (duh), and it has touching moments. It just feels complete. Probably my favorite album this month.

Oyster -  Chloe Moriondo (Synthpop)

This sound is crazy popular right now and Chloe does not do much to remove herself from the crowd. There's something about her that I just like though. It's like when somone swears that the indie band they love is so much better than all of the other indie bands doing the exact same thing.

They're Still Making Music?

Ok these next two I was actually surprised to hear an album from this month:

Wiggle Up, Giddy Up! - The Wiggles (Childrens' Music)

Did you know the Wiggles are still a thing? They came out with three albums last year?! Apple Music says that this is their 101st album!?!? I was bored enough on one March day that I did indeed listen to this whole thing. It seems like they cover all kinds of different genres. For this one, they've hopped on the country inspired sound bandwagon and have some country stars featured to boot (pun intended). Hearing Dolly Parton with The Wiggles was pretty funny. Definitely a fun album for the kiddos.

Based on a True Story - Will Smith (East Coast Hip Hop)

I wish I could unhear this. This is one of the most embarassing things I've ever heard. Interpolating "La Di Da Di" and "Huh" was bad. The opening line being "Will Smith is cancelled" was bad. Will Smith trying way too hard was bad. It's all bad.

And these next two really shoudn't be making music:

OMW2 Rexdale - Nav (Trap)

Everyone's least favorite rapper is back! The one good thing I can say about Nav is that he does not pretend like he cares. He spits his same half-assed flow and same ghost-written bars like he always does.

Peterson - Tory Lanez (Trap)

I'm not going to entertain any attempt at sympathy this dude is looking for. You shot Megan Thee Stallion. No one is on your side. Crying about it on your album is not going to change anything. Please shut up.

What I'm Looking Forward to Next Month

SABLE, fABLE - Bon Iver (Indie Folk)

No need to put any other albums in this section. My favorite artist is coming out with an album for the first time in six years. He's released nearly half of the thing already and I already love it.

That's all for March! Am I going to upload any baseball stuff this month? Only time will tell!

January 2025 Music Recap

I’m going to write here at the end of the month to talk about music! I’ll probably follow a similar structure each time, giving my opinions on the bigger releases and pointing out some smaller releases that I think deserve a listen. I’ll highlight some stuff from other years that I listened to for the first time that I enjoyed and some stuff I’m looking forward to next month. I’m also going to include a playlist of some of my favorite songs from the month. Alright, here we go. Oh! I’m also going to put the genre next to the album title so you’ll have a better idea if the album is something you’ll enjoy. If you don’t know what the genre means, give the album a listen and learn what the sound is! The Big Releases DeBI TiRAR MaS FOToS - Bad Bunny (Latin Pop, Reggaetron) After rocketing to the top and recognizing that his last album sounded too complacent and uninspired, Bad Bunny returned to his Puerto Rican roots. This album is so emotional and pulls from so many personal places for Mr....

May 2025 Music Recap

Looking back on this month, there were a lot more highlights than I thought there were. For some reason I felt like May was pretty dry, but I was WRONG. Let's get into it: Liked List GOLLIWOG - billy woods (Experimental Hip Hop) He does it again. Cerebral hip hop that comes through with so many poignant one liners. Like his other projects, Mr. woods has characters from all over the underground hip hop map on this one. Somehow all of the different styles sound cohesive. The theme of fear and how we respond to it is laced into both the lyrics and instrumentals of this album, with in your face samples that create this chilling feel on some of GOLLIWOG’s tracks. This project touches on fear similarly to how Maps discusses travel; every type of fear is explored from every perspective. GOLLIWOG just builds and builds on itself and definitely deserves a listen all the way through. Sincerely, - Kali Uchis (Pop Soul) As the title suggests, this is Kali’s most sentimental album yet. If you...

The Sliding Scale of Success for the Blue Jays

It is normally very clear whether a team is “going for it” or “rebuilding”. The big spenders, like the Dodgers, will almost always be in it. Some teams, like the 2024 Tigers, just have some things click and a window suddenly opens. Some teams, like the Nationals, are in the middle of a rebuild. Those who refuse to spend, like the Pirates, are locked into a perpetual rebuild and only succeed by accident. And then there are the Blue Jays. For the past few years the Blue Jays have existed in this strange window where it isn’t really clear what they are going for. Teams not knowing which direction they should head in is not all that unusual on the order of a single season, but the length of this stay in limbo for the Blue Jays is quite strange. We’re going to take a look at how we got here and the different paths ahead. After making the ALCS in two straight seasons, the Blue Jays were awful in 2017 and 2018. If you just look at their record, they look pretty awful in 2019 too, but this yea...
