The Sliding Scale of Success for the Blue Jays

It is normally very clear whether a team is “going for it” or “rebuilding”. The big spenders, like the Dodgers, will almost always be in it. Some teams, like the 2024 Tigers, just have some things click and a window suddenly opens. Some teams, like the Nationals, are in the middle of a rebuild. Those who refuse to spend, like the Pirates, are locked into a perpetual rebuild and only succeed by accident. And then there are the Blue Jays. For the past few years the Blue Jays have existed in this strange window where it isn’t really clear what they are going for. Teams not knowing which direction they should head in is not all that unusual on the order of a single season, but the length of this stay in limbo for the Blue Jays is quite strange.
